Classic medicinal notable for its 4-5 ft tall flower stalk it sends up from a basal rosette of huge, fuzzy leaves.  Flowers are known for their pain-relieving, analgesic qualities and are often infused into oil with garlic to treat earaches.   This flowering stalk of this species branches quite a bit, perfect for high flower production and beautiful in the garden.  Leaves are an excellent tonic for the lungs, gently tonifying and strengthening and expectorant, useful for respiratory weakness, coughs, and asthma.  It is considered a protective plant and it is said to be good luck to have it growing around your home.  Prefers full sun, and poor, well-drained soil.  Commonly found in recently disturbed areas.  Its long tap roots helps loosen compacted soils and mullein can be planted as a part of a soil rehabilitation plan.  Herbacious biennial.  Flowers in its second year of growth and then self-seeds itself around the garden, so you’ll always have more.  Hardy to Zone 3.
