BUTTERBUR (PETASITES PALMATUS)

8.95

A truly interesting and enchanting plant that sends up a 1-2 ft tall flowering stalk early in the spring (providing early spring forage for bees before much else is flowering), followed by huge, umbrella-shaped leaves that grow, flattened and wide, at the end of 4-5 ft stalks.  Very exotic and tropical-looking, and has the effect of creating a little butterbur forest with a thick canopy you can crawl under!  Root is traditionally used for spasmodic coughs and migraines and is a low-dose medicinal. Formerly much used in the treatment of whooping cough.  This a north american native, found in the west, and prefers a cool, moist and shaded location but will tolerate more well-drained garden soils.  Hardy perennial to Zone 4.
