Also known as “Sweet Flag,” this distinctly aromatic root is a true pleasure to the senses!  Steeped in lore, and historically used in western herbalism, chinese medicine, Ayurveda, and in Native American medicine as well, the power of this plant is formidable.  Always associated with the head, brain, and mind, many use this plant to enhance cognitive function, to increase awareness and focus, and also to physically clear the head too, as a nasal decongestant.  As a warming aromatic bitter, it also performs wonderfully as a digestive aid, to settle upset stomachs, and to correct “dampness” in the body. Strongly anti-microbial, with an affinity for the throat, it is excellent for colds and flus with sore throats, laryngitis and “singer’s throat.”  Take as a tea, tincture, cordial, or even chew on the root!  Its foliage is very iris-like, and like iris it prefers wet and damp soil, and will even grow in standing water, so is a good choice for a pond.  It will grow in a bit drier soils too, especially if it’s in an area that gets wet seasonally at least, or is on a slope that receives a lot of water via drainage.  Prefers full sun.  Native to North America and Hardy from Zones 11- 4.
