A famous expectorant herb, the leaves of this plant are used for dry and persistent coughs.  The leaves are often smoked in herbal smoking blends and used to relieve bronchitis and even asthma.  The recent discovery of pyrrolizidine alkaloids have led some to deem this plant a “low-dose botanical,” although it history of use is vast, dating back thousands of years, and Pliny, Dioscorides and Galen all make mention of its use.  Plant in a separate bed of their own as they can become a persistent weed in the garden.  They are adapted to a wide range of soils, from wet to well-drained and prefer full sun to part shade. Hardy perennial to Zone 4.
