Lavender is so well-known it hardly needs introduction.  The lovely purple flowers are deeply calming and relaxing, make a nice digestive aid, are anti-fungal and anti-bacterial, and are famous for their ability to treat burns and heal and nurture the skin.  They are very versatile. Use them to make teas, tinctures, infused oils, salves, creams, honeys, soaps, potpourri, bath salts, and more.  The flowers are also often used for culinary endeavors such as cookies and confections.  For best results harvest the flowers just as they are beginning to flower.  A must for the classic herb garden.  Bees and butterflies love the flowers.  Munstead is a famous cold-hardy dwarf variety of lavender, often used in landscaping for its compact growth form, dark purple flowers and longevity.  Prefers full sun and dry, fast-draining soil.  Hardy perennial to Zone 5.
