MARSHMALLOW (ALTHEA OFFICINALIS)

8.95

Althea means “healer” in Greek, and no herb garden is complete without the soft and gentle presence of this plant.  All parts of the plant (leaf, root and flower) are medicinal and are known for their soothing, vulnerary (wound-healing), and demulcent (moistening) qualities.  Commonly used for sore throats, dry coughs, digestive issues, urinary tract irritations and for folks with dry constitutions. The roots are most commonly used in herbalism today.  Most teas and formulas can benefit from the addition of a demulcent herb, since many herbs are drying and astringent in nature, and marshmallow is a great choice, especially in lieu of the threatened slippery elm (Ulmnus rubra) that is often used for this.  Prefers full sun to part shade, and rich, moist, poorly drained soil, although it is tolerant of many different soil types.  A nice choice for a wet, marshy area on your land.  Grows up to 4 ft in height.  Hardy perennial to Zone 4.
