*At Risk
Delicate spring ephemeral that puts on quite a show in early spring.  Lovely blue-green 3 lobed leaves and unique flowers that give way to berries.  A low-dose medicinal and strong emmenagogue that stimulates menstruation and uterine contractions.  Not safe for use during pregnancy except in small doses in the last 2 weeks in a mother’s cordial, but sometimes helpful during childbirth to strengthen contractions.  Specific for arthritis in the joints of the fingers.  Currently at-risk of over harvest in the wild so growing this plant is an act of medicinal plant conservation.  Northeast native that like rich, moist hollows in hardwood forests and full shade. Often grows with wild leeks.  In the garden give full shade, moist but well-drained soils and a top-dressing of compost. Inoculate garden soil with a shovelful of soil/duff from the woods, or better yet, plant it in the woods if you have some!  Hardy perennial to Zone 3.
