Very important medicinal in the western herbal materia medica with powerful, broad-spectrum, anti-microbial properties.  Cold, acrid and bitter, gold-colored roots can be used to drain excess heat from the system, treat strep and other bacterial infections, and fungal infections as well.  Helps balance mucous membranes in the body.  The powdered root works wonders topically on skin infections and is often combined in equal parts with slippery elm and myrrh for this purpose.  Lovely woodland plant native to the northeast, currently at-risk of over harvest in the wild so growing this plant is an act of medicinal plant conservation.  Prefers part-shade, soil under hardwoods, especially if it’s moist, but will grow under average soils in the shade too- plant it under your trees, or in the woods!  Hardy perennial to Zone 4.
