Creeping, low-growing plant of the northeast forest often found in the shade of hemlock
(Tsuga canadensis) groves.  Very fine, golden, thread-like roots are bitter and anti-microbial.  Plant in your shade garden or in the woods.  Prefers full to part shade and some moisture.  Perennial to Zone 2.
